VISUAL ANALYSIS

Title : Life Below Water
Artist : Mr. Fijodor also known as Fijodor Benzo
Year : 2018
Material : Garbage

Fig 1.1

PHASE 1 : OBSERVATION

This design work is done in a portrait format. In the centre of this artwork, there is a whale in the
sea where the whole body is filled with all sorts of rubbish. Around the body, it is surrounded by floating plastic bags and pieces of metal falling off the body. Moreover, the visual elements are the whale as it's the main point of the artwork and the main colours are a variety of blue colours as below the sea there is a gradient where the colours get darker. There is a container ship and buoy or traffic cones above the sea where the dark blue colour is present. - 109 words

PHASE 2 : ANALYSIS

This artwork is asymmetrically balanced. Due to the imbalance of colours, as you can see from the colours of the sky and the sea water. The sea water's colours slightly overpower the sky's colour and even the shape of the whale where if you were to split the artwork into two. The garbage inside of the whale can be seen as harmony and unity as there are various shapes combined to make the whale and the colours fit the aesthetic without making the artwork looking overly messy. Moreover, the whale is used as a symbol to represent the life below water as they might ingest the garbage like shown in the said mammal. - 113 words

PHASE 3 : INTERPRETATION

Reference  Fig 1.2                                                    Reference  Fig 1.3

Reference  Fig 1.4

The similarity that can be found in these artworks are their asymmetrically balanced. For example, in all three street artworks, one side is overpowering than the others as whales and the shape of the ship being split into two aren't symmetrical. Moreover, there is harmony and unity present as in Fig 1.2 which I've explained before and in Fig 1.3, the colours blend in well without making it seem messy while still having some contrast in colours. In Fig1.4, the colours fit the aesthetic of the artwork and the splitting of the whale in even. Lastly, all three artworks use a whale as a symbol to represent the sea creatures. - 113 words
